Role of Business Models in Funding the Biotech Industry: Global Trends and Challenges for Cuban Biotechnology.

Forty-three years after it was founded, with billions of dollars invested, the global biotech industry is still not positioned as a mature low-risk sector for the international investor com-munity. Despite the clear commercial success of a number of leading companies and overall growth of the industry’s rev-enues, most biotech companies are not profi table and many fail to overcome the formidable barrier constituted by the high cost of the sector’s research and development.

However, over the last four years, visible signs of change have appeared, which could be harbingers of an approaching turning point in this trend. This article analyzes the historic background of the biotech in-dustry’s business models and corporate structures, as well as their impact on the industry’s fi nancial framework.

It examines recent changes implemented by the sector’s main actors-in-cluding young startups, venture capital funds and big pharma companies-to mitigate fi nancial risk associated with develop-ment of new biotechnology products. Finally, it discusses the challenges and opportunities that these tendencies entail for Cuban biotechnology development and proposes adoption of business policies more tolerant of the fi nancial risk inherent in this sector, as a condition for at-tracting venture capital. KEYWORDS Biotechnology, fund raising, risk management, entrepreneurship, Cuba.

Monoclonal Anti-IFNγ Antibody, Human IgG1 (8C5F8)

IFN-M412-100ug 100ug
EUR 327
Description: Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ/IFNG) is a dimerized soluble cytokine that is the only member of the type II class of interferon. This interferon was originally called macrophage-activating factor, a term now used to describe a larger family of proteins to which IFN-γ belongs. IFN-gamma has been used in a wide variety of clinical indications. Interferon-gamma (IFNgamma) is a central regulator of the immune response and signals via the Janus Activated Kinase (JAK)-Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) pathway. Interferon gamma has broader roles in activation of innate and adaptive immune responses to viruses and tumors, in part through upregulating transcription of genes involved in cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and antigen processing/presentation. Despite this, rodent and human trophoblast cells show dampened responses to IFNG that reflect the resistance of these cells to IFNG-mediated activation of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II transplantation antigen expression.

IFN-M412 100ug
EUR 2354
Description: IFNγ is secreted by innate-like lymphocytes, including group 1 innate lymphoid cells (ILC1s), and by adaptive lymphocytes, including T helper 1 (TH1) cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), in response to cytokine and antigen stimulation. It plays important roles in tissue homeostasis, immune and inflammatory responses and tumour immunosurveillance. Anti-IFNγ antibody, is a monoclonal antibody used to detected IFNγ, which is a recombinant IgG1 kappa, humanized monoclonal antibody that selectively binds with Human IFN-gamma protein.

Monoclonal Anti-TNF-alpha Antibody, Human IgG1 (13B8)

TNA-AM493 1mg
EUR 321
Description: Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) is a cytokine produced primarily by monocytes and macrophages. It is found in synovial cells and macrophages in the tissues. The primary role of TNFα is in the regulation of immune cells. TNFα is able to induce apoptotic cell death, to induce inflammation, and to inhibit tumorigenesis and viral replication. Dysregulation of TNFα production has been implicated in a variety of human diseases, including major depression, Alzheimers disease and cancer. Recombinant TNFα is used as an immunostimulant under the INN tasonermin. TNFα can be produced ectopically in the setting of malignancy and parallels parathyroid hormone both in causing secondary hypercalcemia and in the cancers with which excessive production is associated.

TNA-AM493-1mg 1mg
EUR 2180
Description: Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) is a cytokine produced primarily by monocytes and macrophages. It is found in synovial cells and macrophages in the tissues. The primary role of TNFα is in the regulation of immune cells. TNFα is able to induce apoptotic cell death, to induce inflammation, and to inhibit tumorigenesis and viral replication. Dysregulation of TNFα production has been implicated in a variety of human diseases, including major depression, Alzheimer's disease and cancer. Recombinant TNFα is used as an immunostimulant under the INN tasonermin. TNFα can be produced ectopically in the setting of malignancy and parallels parathyroid hormone both in causing secondary hypercalcemia and in the cancers with which excessive production is associated.

Monoclonal Anti-RSV-F0 broadly Antibody, Human IgG1 (3B4)

RSV-M649 100ug
EUR 2493.1
Description: Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is the most common etiological agent of acute lower respiratory tract disease in infants and can cause repeated infections throughout life. The RSV fusion glycoprotein (RSV F) is the principal target of RSV neutralizing antibodies in human sera. The RSV F is a type I viral fusion protein synthesized as inactive, single-chain polypeptides that assemble into trimers. RSV F fuses the viral and host cell membranes by irreversible protein refolding from the labile prefusion conformation to the stable post-fusion conformation.

Breaching the Department of Defense’s Biotech Bottleneck.

The global biotechnology revolution offers a profusion of promising innovations for the US Department of Defense (DoD).

As with other emerging technologies, the commercial market, rather than defense, is driving the evolution of biotechnology products, and the ability to harness biotechnology for defense benefits has been hampered by strategic confusion in DoD. Here we describe a set of high-level challenges and a set of potential solutions that could bring innovative biotechnology closer to reality for the warfighter and DoD writ large.
